Holding firm: Bobby Zamora blocks Sebastian Larsson's free kick

After little more than a minute England went so, so close to scoring again, Rodwell rising impressively to meet a cross from Downing with a header that struck the outside of Andreas Isaksson’s left-hand post. By then Rodwell had already gone close with a decent volley.

Capello made changes at the start of the second half, James Milner coming on for Rodwell and Daniel Sturridge earning his first cap as a replacement for Walcott. There was also a switch at goalkeeper, with Scott Carson getting some much needed experience. Later Bent would replace  Zamora.
