Benched: John Terry was rested for Chelsea's Champions League game with Genk

For Capello and his employers there is the added complication that England are playing Spain, a team who have been the  subject of FA complaints about racism in the past.

At the same time, though, Terry’s omission might feel to the manager and the FA as though the situation had been pre-judged and that, in Capello’s view apparently, he has already been punished.

Some clarity on the situation would certainly be welcome, and the FA will leave it as late as possible to advise the Italian in the hope the police can advance their investigation.
