Memo to Harry: this job ALWAYS ends in tears…
Game for a laugh: Jermain Defoe (left)

Little over a week ago, Arsene Wenger gently mocked the  propensity of this country to  overreact to football matters.

'It's not easy anywhere  nowadays,' he said. 'But with the media and the opinions of everybody we live in a constant drama.
It is not like that… We have to stop making a drama of everything. There are much more dreadful things in life.'

A sensible man is Arsene Wenger. Which is presumably why he said he will never manage England.

So good luck, Harry. The curtain goes up on your drama soon. Let's not have any more tragicomedies.

Time for Villa fans to get real

When people have a problem, I try to do everything I can to get them to snap out of it. I sit them down and say: 'Snap out of it.'

This method doesn't always work. But the blunt message is going out to the people of Aston Villa this week.

What on earth are you thinking about by trying to stage 'fan protests' before Sunday's clash with Manchester City? What happened to the idea of actually supporting a team?

It's depressing enough that a good man and manager like Alex McLeish has to deal with sulky, insubordinate players in his dressing room (yes you, Stephen Ireland and Charles N'Zogbia). It is even more shameful and embarrassing when the followers of a big club start to turn on themselves.
