Part of me would prefer it if Harry Redknapp turned down the England job.

Frankly, it would be quite refreshing if the only credible English candidate were to look at the position and all it entails and say, 'Nah, I'll pass thanks very much'. It might teach us all a lesson.

The chap has just been through a court battle that made him ill, doctors recently tweaked a valve in his heart and any sensible human being would hope that as he trundles towards his 65th birthday he might have enough sense to avoid the hassle.

But what has sense ever had to do with the England football team? Of course he'll take the job. He wants it, England actually need him to take it, too.

That is why headlines have been declaring, 'Everyone's wild about Harry', 'Harry is the perfect choice' and even dubbing him 'Redknapp Adair', a phrase that conjured up an image of a man wearing a hard hat, covered in filth, standing in the middle of a firestorm. Perhaps Umbro could make that the  England manager's uniform.

Because roll on two years and the chances are this week's  worshipping headlines will have been long forgotten and the front pages will shout 'Harry out'.

That's how it always is. Just ask Stuart Pearce what  it's like to be elevated to the main post. The caretaker boss, dutifully keeping the manager's seat warm following Fabio Capello's flounce, woke on Friday to find a 'race row'  from nearly two decades ago thrown back in his face as a reward.

For added insult, he was smeared by association in stories detailing extreme right-wing  political beliefs apparently held by his brother.
