The messiah! But things could soon turn sour for Harry Redknapp should he become England manager
None of this mattered when he was put in charge of the England Under 21 squad. Nor when he was given control of Team
GB for the 2012 Olympic Games. But drop him in the England chair, even temporarily, and all bets are off. Madness ensues.
Gary Neville, the former England international and now a TV and newspaper pundit, posted a line on Twitter: 'I have to say newspapers rubbish this morning. That's all I will say…'
And, on this particular occasion, it was quite difficult to argue.
I've been culpable of criticising and lampooning my fair share of England bosses over the years in various jobs, and it would be hypocritical not to admit that.
But exhuming a 17-year-old story in such a manner marked something of a low, I thought. Far wiser and more relevant to deal with the here and now, surely.
Luckily, the queue of players registering their desire to have Redknapp installed as England boss provided some light relief.
They lined up to welcome him with a Twitter tape parade of hashtags. And yes, they're right behind 'Arry, doncha know?
And they will continue to be, right up until the point when he drops them.
Jermain Defoe's take was the most amusing as he 'exclusively' announced 'Harry is the greatest!' Of course, spin back a few weeks and Defoe wasn't lauding Redknapp as being quite so magnificent when Emmanuel Adebayor arrived on loan from Manchester City and relegated him to the substitutes' bench.
In fact Defoe was even hinting about abandoning his 'great' manager. He said: 'I'm 29, I need to play football, it's as simple as that - there's a tournament in the summer.'
Indeed there is. I wonder who might be in charge. Oops!
Since Harry is being cast as a 'genius' on the way in, equally Capello must play the part of disastrous buffoon on the way out. That's how the script goes, although the manner in which the Italian departed suggested he was happy enough to stick to his assigned role.
Removing the captaincy from John Terry was the only sensible choice by the FA. If Capello felt there had been a patent lack of communication before this decision was made, I assume he now knows how the majority of the squad have felt about their dealings with him.
Capello has the communications skills of a pumice stone. But how odd the only people incapable of talking about the
England team seem to be in charge of it?
If we could find some way to trap all the hot air the rest of us generate, the country would be able to do away with its reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear power.
I am obviously wafting some more self-righteous guff into the breeze, since it's cold outside and anything less than a thousand words would be regarded as a dereliction of duty.
