Sheringham, who played under Pardew at West Ham, believes his former boss, recently named Manager of the Year, can reach the top and would find it difficult to turn down the role in the future.

‘He’s getting better and better,’ Sheringham continued. ‘He is very accomplished now in the Premier League, and he’s got some outstanding players. Who knows, if he has another good season next year there will be a lot of people talking about him.

‘I don’t think there is anything stopping him, he has a lot of self-belief and if his name was pushed up there he won’t shy away from it without a doubt.’
