Dual role: Hodgson will leave his post at West Bromwich Albion at the end of the season
Bernstein said his Club England group had consulted a wide range of people before arriving at Hodgson as their No 1 choice a month ago.
Clearly pleased with himself, the FA chairman said: 'I won't mention names, but there were a range of well-respected people in football. I think we got it spot on. It was better to come up with one favoured candidate than interview a range of people. We're sitting here with our favoured man.'
