Jose Mourinho has emerged as Harry Redknapp's most serious rival for the job of the next England manager.
Both men have strong support within the Football Association and, despite suggestions of a long list of other candidates, it was disclosed that it has become virtually a two-horse race to succeed Fabio Capello.
People's choice: Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp
Redknapp is the popular choice among fans and players, with Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand among his backers. And Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United boss, claims that the FA will be too frightened to go against the huge wave of support for the Tottenham manager.
But the governing body know Mourinho also has a significant appeal to supporters based on his success - in the Premier League with Chelsea and in Europe - and his unquestionable charisma.
The Real Madrid manager is far from settled in Spain after a series or run-ins with his bosses at the Bernabeu. He has, as usual, been successful but is expected to leave this summer and is wondering what is left for him to achieve in club management.
