Harry Redknapp is prepared to talk to the FA about the England job but has asked for a few days' grace after the hardest, most dramatic week of his life.

Senior FA officials were talking at Wembley on Friday about  a successor to Fabio Capello, and Tottenham's manager is believed to be at the top of their shortlist now he has been cleared of tax evasion.

Tottenham are bracing themselves for an approach but Redknapp, who Sportsmail understands would be interested in the job only on a permanent basis at the end of the season and not just for this summer's European Championship, first wants to focus on Saturday's game against Newcastle before two days at home.

'The trial has knocked me for six,' he said. 'I think when you have been through that it takes a couple of days to get over it.

'But if the opportunity comes, I'll have to consider it. It wouldn't be easy leaving Tottenham. It would be very difficult.

'Right now, I'm just thinking about Newcastle, getting the team right and trying to win.'

Redknapp also spoke of the difficulties associated with the England job.
