Shining light: England captain Gerrard expects Rooney to lift England to the next level

The return of Rooney has sparked a change in language from the England manager - and a little more ambition.

'Dreaming is what football is about,' added Hodgson. 'You play international football to try and get carried away.

'I think we've got to be happy that expectations have risen and people are maybe thinking we can go a bit further then when we started the competition.

'That doesn't mean to say we can guarantee success or fulfil those expectations.'
