Barry blow for England as Manchester City midfielder is ruled out of Euros
Posted Tuesday, May 29, 2012 by Dailymail

Gareth Barry will miss Euro 2012 after a scan confirmed a tear in his lower abdomen which rules him out for at least three weeks.

Barry was devastated despite fearing the worst from the moment he first felt a twinge of discomfort, soon after coming on as a half-time substitute during England's win in Norway, on Saturday.

The 53-cap Manchester City midfielder is the second player to be forced out of Roy Hodgson's squad after back-up goalkeeper John Ruddy broke a finger in training last week.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka has been promoted from the stand-by list, with Phil Jones earmarked as midfield cover in case Hodgson's squad is depleted by further injuries or suspensions in that area.

In the end, it was not a difficult call for the England manager. The scan showed a clear tear and an initial diagnosis estimates Barry will be out for three-to-four weeks.

All parties agreed he could not take part in the Euros but he should be ready for pre-season training in July.

'I'm very disappointed to lose Gareth,' said Hodgson. 'Not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years.
