Gerrard, 31, welcomed the chance to renew the relationship with Hodgson that foundered after the England boss experienced an abortive spell in charge at Anfield.

'I've said enough on Roy when he was at Liverpool,' added Gerrard.

'He's now England boss. It's important that we all get behind him, he's a very good manager. I'm sure that moving forward we can be very successful under him.'

He added: 'We know that we can play better than that.

'Hopefully once we get used to the manager a bit more, and have more of his training sessions, and the message hits home a bit more, we will improve.

'The more we get used to the manager, then better performances will come.

'When every manager comes in, there is a bit of pressure on and it is always important to start well'

And he forecast a bright future for the striking partnership between match-winner Ashley Young and Andy Carroll.
