Steven Gerrard's return as England captain may have lasted just one half, but it was a hugely significant spell in his career.

That is because England made it a winning debut for new manager Roy Hodgson.

'It was good not just for me but for everyone,' said the Liverpool and England skipper.

'When a new manager comes in there is a bit of pressure. A nice win, clean sheet, there were quite a few positives.

'It's always nice to lead the country out but what is more important is that I won as captain. You are judged on winning games and it was nice to get off to a winning start.
