Waiting game! Eriksson urges FA to delay appointing England's manager

Eriksson, who left England after the 2006 World Cup, rates the job as the best in world football.

He is held in such esteem by players past and present that both David Beckham and Wayne Rooney provided video tributes for the Swedish version of This is Your Life recently.

Capello's decision to quit in the row over John Terry's captaincy brought back memories of the Rio Ferdinand affair - when Eriksson was not allowed to select the Manchester United defender after he failed to turn up for a drugs test.

'I was very surprised (by Capello's exit). I can't understand that. He has done the job after the last World Cup, qualified in style, done all the work and not wanted to be part of that.

'I had a similar case when Rio was not allowed to play. That was above my head. Now, with Terry, you have to understand the FA as well.
