The manager had marched stonyfaced across the pitch at half-time, but everything had looked to be going well for Fulham, albeit against a limited Danish side with nothing left to play for.

Bobby Zamora, who was dropped at the weekend after Jol questioned his commitment in training, had started the match and set up Dempsey's 27th-minute opener.

'We love you Bobby' sang a lone voice in the crowd midway through the first half, but it was sometimes difficult to tell if the fondness was reciprocated by a player now attracting considerable interest from Sunderland, QPR and Aston Villa. Then again, it always is.

Zamora linked up well with Dempsey early on and created the American's goal with typical selflessness. Frei made a
surging run down the left and Zamora laid off the 18-year-old's cross to Dempsey, whose right-foot shot found the bottom left-hand corner for his seventh goal of the season.
