Wary of Bolton's visit and with two of Fulham's senior players - captain Danny Murphy and Schwarzer - sidelined through injury, Jol made six changes from last Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Swansea and paid the price.
They started brightly but failed to close out the game, allowing Odense one more attack after Frei opted to indulge in a bit of showboating in the box rather than run the ball into the corner.
Jol said: 'It was six seconds before the end and, instead of keeping it, we wanted to score. Then we conceded a goal from a break and that was disappointing, as was the first.
'It's a big blow but there's always a disadvantage and an advantage. Hopefully there will be benefits in other competitions.'
With Fulham just three points above the relegation zone in the Premier League, last night's defeat may prove a nice early
Christmas present for Jol. But the dramatic manner of his side's exit and the despondency in the dressing room will take a few days to forget.
