England striker Darren Bent  celebrated the FIFA climbdown over poppies last night by posing in a special T-shirt, available for £20 All profits donated to The Poppy Appeal - and manager Capello (right)

He said: 'It is a victory for common sense and respectability. This is not about commerce and selling shirts or voting for political parties or  different religions. It is in memory of people who have lost their lives in service. They can be from any background, any rank or any country. That's what makes it different. I do a lot of work with the Special Olympics for those with learning disabilities and it's the same; it can affect any family.

'Well done to the FA and David Bernstein for pursuing this - and to those who led the campaign like the Daily Mail.'

After an astonishing day of behind-the-scenes talks, the FA and FIFA eventually put out a joint statement announcing that the poppy would be on the armbands. The FA and the England team accepted the compromise.
