Early retirement: Scholes and Shearer both quit on England

'There may have been other reasons why Paul Robinson and Ben Foster quit England while they were in the prime of their careers, but if the main one was that they thought it was pointless being in a squad if they aren't going to play then, in my eyes, that not right.'

Foster announced his retirement from international football in May, mentioning England No 1 Joe Hart in his statement, saying: 'In Joe, England have a goalkeeper who is extremely talented.'
