England boss Capello under threat from inside the FA

Fabio Capello's reign as England manager is coming under increasing threat from factions within the FA.

While FA chairman David Bernstein and other senior figures insist the Italian will see out his £6million-a-year contract, other elements inside Wembley want a new man in place for next summer's European Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine.

Formula for trouble: Capello was at Monza with Bernie Ecclestone rather than watching a match

Capello, who gave his critics more ammunition by going to the Italian Grand Prix yesterday instead of watching a Premier League game, survived England's World Cup disaster of 2010 because it would have cost £11m to sack him.

But that figure would fall to £3m as he enters the last six months of his deal and there are many inside the FA who now believe, after last week's tortuous 1-0 win over Wales, that it is a price worth paying.

A well-placed source said: 'It is on the agenda that Capello will be replaced before Euro 2012 and someone like Harry Redknapp will come in. People are all over the idea.

'Capello did not handle tournament football at all well in South Africa. The camp was a disaster and the players were unhappy. You could smell that a mile off.
