Young, who scored his third goal in six internationals this year, said: 'The performance wasn't great but you go out to win the game and that's what we did. We boosted our chances of finishing top.'

Wales boss Gary Speed thought his team had rescued a point when the chance fell to Earnshaw, 14 minutes from time.

'If you'd want one person in that position it'd be Earnie,' he said.

'We knew it would open up in the second half and we'd get our passing game going, and we managed to open them up.'
