Ash and grab: England were lucky and must improve, says Capello

Fabio Capello admitted England were lucky winners against Wales and warned his team they must improve if they want to be European champions.

Ashley Young scored the only goal of the game at Wembley, leaving England needing just one point from their final game in Montenegro next month to win Group G and qualify for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.

Capello was far from happy, however, after watching his team go close to throwing away their lead when Wales substitute Robert Earnshaw missed an open goal, firing the late chance over the bar.

'We were lucky,' said Capello. 'In that moment, we made a big mistake in front of goal and it was luck. We did not play well in the last 15 minutes. We suffered a lot. We didn't play good passes, never pressed the ball. We played sometimes on the counter-attack but without speed.

'We need to improve. We cannot play for only 20 minutes but for the whole game. We must never lose sight of what we want to do, in every moment of the game. It is important. We need to own the pitch.'
