On terms: Ashley Young (centre) celebrates his goal against Switzerland
Thanks to a superb run from Leighton Baines, Milner was able to find space and chip the ball in for the Everton left-back to chest it back.
Young met it cleanly, sweeping it low past goalkeeper Diego Benaglio into the far corner. Briefly, England at last began to look the part. And then on 71 minutes, Young surged through the midfield and unleashed a strike which Benaglio could only parry.
The ball fell to Bent 12 yards out, but he visibly tensed as he struck it high over the crossbar. Wembley howled in despair.
