It could have been one of the biggest headaches facing Manchester City next season - a Twitter account by Mario Balotelli.

The striker appeared to have joined the growing band of footballers on Twitter under the name @mbalotelli1990.

The account was set up an account on Thursday and has a number of pictures of the Italian - but City have claimed it is a fake.

The club wrote on Twitter: 'Had it confirmed from the player himself that @mbalotelli1990 is a fake account. Mario Balotelli doesn't have a Twitter. Thanks! #MCFC'

Thousands of fans quickly followed the account and on it there is a picture of the player snapping himself in a bid to prove it's really him, saying: 'Here I am to show you it is really me......enjoy.'

There are also a number of images of Balotelli and his brother Enoch, whom he is very close to and spends a lot of time alongside.

Balotelli is currently with the Italy squad at Euro 2012.
