4-0: Cesc Fabregas completes the scoring
Given’s one-handed stop from a Xavi shot defied belief, a rasping Silva shot was blocked by
Dunne and Arbeloa shot narrowly wide after Torres had attempted a cheeky backheel. But it was a brief respite from the goals raining in.
In the 71st minute Aiden McGeady, Keith Andrews, St Ledger and Ward all slipped, Silva didn’t and then Torres kept his feet and composure to sprint through and beat Given with a lethal finish.
It was his final touch before Fabregas was let loose, rather than Fernando Llorente, and within moments the former Arsenal midfielder picked up a low corner to hammer home off the post.
Great left-wing prospect James McClean entered the fray to lift spirits, if not to save the game, but it was 166 minutes too late.
