Warsaw turns into a war zone with more than 100 arrested before Poland v Russia
Led away: Polish riot police detain a fan

To make matters worse, the match fell on Russia Day and it was a march by 5,000 visiting fans from the centre of Warsaw to the National Stadium that sparked the worst trouble. The Russians were outnumbered by their Polish rivals and the 6,000 police deployed to keep order.

Up to 50 riot vans raced into the square to separate the fans  fighting in the main road and punching anything that got in their way. Police also used water cannons as the city descended into chaos.

The hooligans are back and this is the face of the tournament now, in a frightening and hostile city.

The battles took place close to the Fan Zones where, earlier in the day, the party people of Poland and Russia mixed freely as they drank beer, banged drums and watched Greece take on the Czech Republic before the main event in Group A.
