Rio backlash! Hodgson under pressure to explain Ferdinand snub as players back defender
Conflict: John Terry (right) was selected ahead of Ferdinand

When Terry’s trial was delayed until after Euro 2012, Reading striker Jason Roberts claimed the England dressing-room would become ‘toxic’ if he remained captain.

None of the black players in the squad wants to raise the Rio issue and damage the campaign but it has left them feeling uneasy.

Former England boss Steve McClaren added: ‘Imagine the media attention surrounding John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. Roy had to choose between them. He’s in a lose-lose situation.’
