Given plays down fears over knee injury ahead of Euro 2012

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given insists that he will be fit for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine despite a knee injury proving a setback to his preparations.

The 36-year-old declared that if the competition began last weekend he would have started, and that he was merely rested for the friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The keeper told reporters: "I just hurt my knee in training on Monday and had a bit of a reaction, that was all.

"If the Euros had started on Saturday I think I could have played, so I'm not worried

"Obviously I'd love to be training every day and have been playing because I don't like missing any games, but sometimes you have to listen to your body.

"I hadn't trained, but I would have played. The specialist and the doctor felt it was just better to rest it for a few more days and then I'll be 100 per cent.

"The specialist was happy with the way things went on Thursday. I'll probably train in the middle of the week. It's just a knee problem.

"The scan was fine, so there's just a bit of swelling and stuff," he continued. "There is no major problem with the ligaments or anything."

The former Manchester City keeper is targeting a return to the national side in their final friendly agaubst Hungary in Budapest, but praised his deputy Keiren Westwood as more than capable of stepping up to the plate in his absence.

He added: "Yeah, he's well capable. He was unlucky what happened at Sunderland, he came down with the flu when he was playing really well and hasn't got his place back.

"I think we all know how good he is, he’s a very good goalkeeper.

"I think he made a good save [in the] second half. They had two long-range shots and didn't create too many other chances apart from that so from a defensive side of things we were happy as well.

"Their keeper made some great saves in the second half and it could have been two- or three-nil easily, and that gives us good belief and confidence going to the finals.

"It's nice to go away with a win, for us and for the fans."
