Bologna attacker Alessandro Diamanti has declared that being part of the Italy national side is "better late than never" as he looks to make his way into the Azzurri's final 23-man squad for Euro 2012.

The 29-year-old has previously won only one cap, featuring for 45 minutes in a friendly against Romania in November 2010, and the former Brescia player was in a positive mood to greet the media.

“Better late than never!” he told reporters at Italy's training complex at Coverciano.

“I did everything I could to deserve this call up. I had a great season; the coach gave me this chance and now I am doing my all.

“I’d never change the route I have taken so far, as I reached this stage and so there are no regrets.

“In football there are some who mature at 18, some at 25 and others at 30. In fact, some never mature at all. Each of us has his own tale to tell.

“I think I’ve grown up a great deal this year and I’m here to prove it. I’m playing my cards here with the utmost enthusiasm, then it’s up to the coach to decide. I am a versatile player and can take on different roles.”

After an impressive domestic campaign, the forward was quizzed on where he may be next season, but he refused to rule out a move.

“My future? My agents are working on it, but I am focused only on the Azzurri," he concluded.

Diamanti grabbed seven goals and seven assists in 30 Serie A appearances last season.
