Volatile striker Mario Balotelli has told Italy coach Cesare Prandelli that he will do his utmost to keep his temper on a leash.
Balotelli's poor temparament earned him four dismissals in the past campaign for Manchester City and Prandelli even declared a couple of months back that the youngster's lack of discipline could prevent him from earning a place in the Italy squad for EURO 2012.
Not only did he let down his team due to his continual absence through suspension, the controversial striker was also quarelsome and repeatedly argued with his fellow Manchester City players during important moments in matches.
Luckily for the 22-year-old, the Citizens managed to pull through and win the league title on the final day of the season. But with players now turning their focus to the upcoming European championships in Poland and Ukraine, it remains uncertain if he will be drafted for the final Italy squad for the upcoming tournament.
Prandelli has named Balotelli in his preliminary squad list for the tournament and he revealed that he has been impressed with what seemed to be a changed Balotelli during recent training sessions. The former Inter Milan player even came up to the head coach and made the bold promise that he would not get sent off in the tournament.
"Mario will keep his word, I'm sure," the former Fiorentina coach told reporters at a press conference. "How much confidence do I have in him from zero to 100? One hundred."
Balotelli will not find it easy to make the final squad as he is having to fight for a place alongside Antonio di Natale, Antonio Cassano, Matia Destro, Franco Borini and Sebastian Giovinco. The final squad will be decided on Monday afternoon but Prandelli insists that he is not worried about the selection headache in attack and he would even be open to taking on all six attackers to the championships.
"All six of the attackers deserve to be here," he admitted. "They've really impressed me. They have quality, movement, they know how to attack and integrate with the rest of the team.
"They are modern attackers. If I keep all six in the squad then I'll sacrifice a defender.
"I have some very interesting forward players with different characteristics. And Destro is certainly wasting no time and he's giving me a good feeling."
Riccardo Montolivo looks set to miss out on the tournament, however, as he is suffering from a thigh strain.
"My worries surround the three or four players who are recovering from injury," he said.
"Montolivo is my biggest concern. I know him well, he wants to recover and is on the mend, but I still have doubts.
"I want to leave for the tournament with certainties and no doubts. I don't feel as if I can go to Euro 2012 with a few injured players.
"We know that we can start something important here. All of the players know that this will be an extraordinary opportunity for them."
Italy will face defending champions Spain, Republic of Ireland and Croatia in Group C. Giorgio Chiellini is facing a race against time to be ready for the opener against Spain on June 10 after suffering a thigh injury but the signs are positive that he will make a full recovery for the match.
