Roy Keane fears Wayne Rooney’s chances of starring at Euro 2012 could be blighted by boredom.

The striker is banned for England’s first two matches, against France and Sweden, and Keane does not expect him to be involved in either of the warm-up friendlies against Norway on Saturday or Belgium a week later.

Free time: Wayne Rooney enjoyed a break in Las Vegas this week - but Roy Keane says he will get bored not playing

That will mean he will not have played a competitive match for 37 days — since Manchester United’s final game of the season against Sunderland — when England face Ukraine in their final Group D match on June 19.

Former United midfielder Keane said: ‘I think the big problem Wayne will have is the boredom, mentally trying to build up for a game. As you get older you might be married and have kids, and appreciate peace and quiet, but Wayne is still young, he’s pretty active mentally — Roy Hodgson will have to manage that.
