Rio Ferdinand has revealed his heartache after failing to make Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2012.
Ferdinand turned to Twitter to say: ‘Absolutely loved playing for England.
‘To say I’m gutted is an understatement of the highest order.’
The 33-year-old Manchester United defender and former England captain, who won the first of his 81 caps in 1997, is not set to rush into a hasty retirement from international football.
The end of an era? Rio Ferdinand has revealed his frustration at being left out of Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad
But it is hard to envisage Hodgson, who has just signed a four-year deal as England manager, recalling him after claiming that Ferdinand was omitted for ‘simple football reasons’.
Reading striker and BBC radio pundit Jason Roberts claimed that leaving out Ferdinand and taking John Terry to Euro 2012 sent out the wrong message.
Roberts spoke out earlier this year to insist the England dressing room would be ‘toxic’ if Terry was allowed to captain his country before a charge that he racially abused Rio’s brother Anton during a game had been heard in court.
