PLANS ... Gary Neville
GARY NEVILLE’S impact on the England set-up will become evident today — if Roy Hodgson turns to youth for Euro 2012.
Former Manchester United right-back Neville was the shock choice on Monday to work alongside new national boss Hodgson.
And the Sky Sports pundit recently caused a stir by calling on England to ditch the old guard in favour of a new-look, youthful line-up.
Neville, talking in March, insisted: “Now is the time to bring through a new group of young players.
“Now is the time to clear the decks and go in with a fresh approach — with players who are not tarnished by failure or cynicism.
“They’ve got to get rid of the negativity because it doesn’t create the right environment for young people to thrive and blossom in.”
Neville, 37, called on England to kick off Euro 2012 against France with a side boasting exciting young talents such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Arsenal and Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge.
He could not find a place for United winger Ashley Young in his 23 — though he did pick Tom Cleverley for the bench.
Neville’s team was: Joe Hart, Kyle Walker, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Ashley Cole, Jack Wilshere, Steven Gerrard, Scott Parker, Oxlade- Chamberlain, Wayne Rooney, Sturridge.
Although Arsenal starlet Wilshere, Manchester United’s Smalling and Spurs ace Walker have since been ruled out of the Euros due to injury, the team shows that the 85-times capped Neville has no sentiment for the past and his former colleagues.
