Late strike... Hotshot Carroll hits form at ideal time to force his way into Roy's 23
He's done it before: Carroll's only England goal in three appearances for his country came against Ghana at Wembley in March, 2011. The striker blasted the opener in a 1-1 friendly draw

It would be harsh on Peter Crouch if Carroll was selected at his expense. Crouch has had an excellent season at Stoke. But Carroll possesses athleticism and power in abundance, as well as great ability when it comes to holding up the ball.

'I definitely think Andy has put himself in contention for the England squad,' said Johnson.

'In the last few weeks, he has been fantastic. He is unplayable. Chelsea have two big centre halves and he has thrown them around. Andy looks like he is quicker and he is working a lot harder.

'You could see John Terry was petrified at times. Andy is a big lump but he's good on the ball and works very hard. He will scare a lot of defenders.'
