Brooking believes the fact that he was the only ‘football person’ on the panel has brought his role into sharper focus.

‘It happens,’ he said. ‘You’ve just got to deal with it, because the general reaction to Roy has been really good. We knew his peers would be supportive, but the rest of the country seems to have reacted well.

‘And Harry has conducted himself with a lot of dignity.’
Brooking rejects the charge that the timing of the appointment has been disruptive.
