Michael Dawson's worst fears were confirmed with the Tottenham defender set to miss the rest of the season, leaving his Euro 2012 England dream in tatters.
But his latest setback is the biggest blow yet after scans revealed he has ruptured ankle ligaments, after limping off in Spurs' FA Cup fifth round replay win over Stevenage on Wednesday night.
A statement posted on the club's official website read: 'Scans taken this morning have determined that Michael Dawson is likely to be absent for a period of 10-12 weeks.
Over and out: Dawson leaves Spurs Lodge after learning confirmation of his injury
'The central defender was stretchered off in the first half of the FA Cup tie against Stevenage last night, with it now confirmed that he suffered a ruptured ligament in his right ankle.'
Dawson was in contention to make the final 23-man England party for this summer's European Championships in Poland and the Ukraine.
The news will certainly disappoint manager Harry Redknapp, who feared the worst after witnessing the defender being carried off at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.
Redknapp said: ‘It didn’t look good, it didn’t look right. It’s a pretty bad injury he’s got there. It would be a miracle if he’s not (out for the season).
