Gerrard had a tight hamstring and came off in the first half as a precaution. Sturridge suffered a big-toe injury late in the game and Smalling was carried off after clashing heads with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as the Holland striker put his team 2-0 up. Both players went to hospital for checks.

'Chris took a really bad bang on the head,' said Pearce. 'He split it open and has gone to hospital. I spoke to him as he came off the pitch, so he was conscious.'
