France head coach Laurent Blanc has announced that Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will captain the team at Euro 2012.

The 25-year-old custodian defeated competition from AC Milan center back Philippe Mexes and Barcelona left back Eric Abidal for the honor.

"This is a great vote of confidence from the coach," Lloris said at a press conference. "I knew I was one of the three candidates.

"There are players on the team who have more responsibilities but you have to remain true to yourself.

"This is a great source of pride, but I cannot stop here."

Since Blanc took over the team after World Cup 2010, several different players have captained France, including Florent Malouda and Samir Nasri.

Speaking ahead of France's friendly against Germany, Lloris admitted that Les Bleus can only aim for the best possible result against Die Mannschaft.

"Germany are one of the three top teams in the world," he added. "They have shown in the last competitions a certain status which France have lost.

"Germany want to win this competition. We, on the other hand, are working to go as far as possible. Tomorrow [Wednesday], Germany are favorites."
