England blow for Cleverley as Man United midfielder is ruled out with ankle injury

Tom Cleverley is out of England’s game against Holland next week after the Manchester United midfielder damaged his right ankle in Thursday’s Europa League defeat by Dutch side Ajax.

It is another cruel blow for Cleverley, who was denied an England debut in this fixture last August when it was postponed due to the London riots.

The 22-year-old then suffered a ligament injury in his left foot that restricted him to two games in five months before returning in Amsterdam last week.

He was hurt in Thursday’s second leg at Old Trafford when Ajax defender Dico Koppers caught him on the ankle and will be out for two to three weeks.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: ‘We don’t think it’s too serious.’

However, Cleverley is out of England’s game on Wednesday and United’s trip to Norwich on Sunday.

There was better injury news for United after Ferguson revealed Antonio Valencia ‘should be back in a week or so’ from his hamstring injury.
