Late claim: Is it not worth giving Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain some much needed international practice
Last week, I suggested a new England team for Euro 2012 of Joe Hart, Kyle Walker, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Ashley Cole, Jack Wilshere, Scott Parker, Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge, Wayne Rooney (when not suspended) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It may be a bit bullish but I think it’s a time to be positive.
We can’t write off a tournament but do we have a better chance of winning it with eight experienced players who won’t be available in 2014? I would say no. So blood some youngsters and be discerning in the older players you take. Make sure the bulk of the team will be around for 2014 and 2016. Don’t end up getting knocked out in the quarter-finals and find that you have to bring in a whole new team for 2014.
The England football team have to win a tournament at some stage. It can be done, just don’t expect it immediately. But let’s take the opportunity presented to us this week and let’s believe that we can do it, in time.
