Arsenal fear Jack Wilshere will miss the rest of the season after suffering a setback in his return from an ankle injury.
The news leaves England manager Fabio Capello sweating on the fitness of his key midfielder ahead of Euro 2012.
Wilshere has missed the entire campaign to date due to a stress fracture of his right ankle but was expected back in full training as early as next week.
Rocked: Jack Wilshere has suffered an injury setback in training with Arsenal
However, he broke down during a fitness session on Tuesday.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: 'I am really disappointed for him because he is a football animal. I am so sad that at that age you have to be out for such a long time with not any obvious reason.'
The England midfielder, 20, saw a specialist and will have appointments in the coming days as the Gunners try to establish the best course of action.
But initial tests indicate Wilshere could be missing until at least April.
That would leave Wenger with a major dilemma. Having Wilshere back for the final handful of games would be a massive boost.
But there is a feeling within the club that it would benefit the player in the long term if Arsenal wrote off this season to focus on ensuring the troublesome ankle is 100 per cent rehabilitated.
