Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United will capitalise on any mistakes from Premier League leaders City after Fulham win

England striker netted one of United's goals in his 300th Premier League appearance and hails their recent form away from home as they keep the pressure on Roberto Mancini's men

Wayne Rooney has expressed his delight after Manchester United's impressive 5-0 win over Fulham on Wednesday night and insisted his side were ready to capitalise on any slip from title rivals Manchester City.

The in-form Englishman scored United's fourth of the night on what was his 300th Premier League appearance, becoming the youngest player to have reached that landmark.

The champions will have to settle with being second at Christmas but Rooney was in confident mood following the Red Devils' dominant performance.

He told the BBC: "It was a great win for us - it has been an amazing turnaround in our away form. We played really well, we took our chances and it was comfortable in the end.

"In the second half we took our foot off the gas but we were always in control and we knew we were going to win the game. We have a lot of games coming up so it was nice to not have to run as much as usual.

"We knew that if we could win. We have two home games coming up, so we need to keep pushing and if City slip up we will be there waiting."

The Red Devils will be confident of securing maximum points from their next two games as they welcome Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers to Old Trafford.
