Manchester United teenager Phil Jones was named to start in midfield for England's friendly international against world champions Spain here Saturday.
Jones will partner defensive midfielder Scott Parker as Fabio Capello fields an experimental line-up which is missing the experience of captain John Terry and star striker Wayne Rooney.
Elsewhere Capello has opted for Glen Johnson and Ashley Cole as England's fullbacks, either side of a central defensive pairing of Everton's Phil Jagielka and his former club-mate Joleon Lescott.
Further forward, Capello picked in-form Manchester City midfielder James Milner alongside captain Frank Lampard and Theo Walcott, with Darren Bent deployed as the lone striker.
Spain, the reigning World Cup and European champions, meanwhile picked Manchester City's David Silva to start in attack alongside Barcelona's David Villa and Andres Iniesta.
Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque named a powerful midfield featuring Barcelona duo Xavi and Sergio Busquets alongside Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso.
Alvaro Arbeloa, Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos and Jordi Alba make up the defence with captain Iker Casillas winning a record-equalling 126th cap in goal.
