Frank Lampard: We can reign against Spain

FRANK LAMPARD last night insisted he cannot wait to face the feared Spanish Inquisition.

Spain have named a star-studded squad for Saturday's friendly at Wembley.

They include Barcelona's David Villa, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Cesc Fabregas, Manchester City's David Silva and Lamps' Chelsea team-mates Fernando Torres and Juan Mata.

But the England star says that makes it the perfect opportunity for the Three Lions to show what they can do.

The 33-year-old Chelsea midfielder said: "Spain are a great team with so many great players. So the experience of taking them on at Wembley will be fantastic for us.

"It will be a terrific test against such a quality side and such brilliant individuals.

"But if we can put in a top performance — as I'm sure we can — it can give us a real boost for what's in store at the European Championship finals next summer."

Lampard is one of the few players in world football who knows what it takes to come out on top against world champions Spain and European champions Barca, winning against both with club and country.

Lampard played at Villa Park when England won 3-0 in Sven Goran Eriksson's first game in charge in February 2001, our last win over the imperious Iberians.

He has also been on the receiving end, though, losing 1-0 at the Bernabeu in November 2004, 1-0 at Old Trafford in February 2007 and 2-0 in Seville in February 2009.

He has fared much better against the mighty Barca with a record of two wins, four draws and two defeats.

And Lamps scored one of his best-ever goals against them at the Nou Camp in 2006, swivelling to curl the ball over keeper Victor Valdes into the top far corner.

He also scored in the epic 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge in March 2005 and fired home a penalty in a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp in March 2006. Which is why he is not intimidated in the slightest.

Lampard said: "Yes I know what it takes to win against them — so I know it can be done. But I've also come out on the wrong side of them too so I'm also under no illusions over how difficult it will be."

Lampard will certainly be in the thick of the action, going head to head with Iniesta and Xavi in the heart of midfield yet again.

So he is thrilled to be in top form going into the clash. He said: "My form is very good so I came here happy because I'm playing so well. I'm feeling great, I feel like I'm really motoring right now.

"The goals are going in, I've got seven so far, and I'm feeling confident in myself and what I can do.

"I'm the first to admit that sometimes it may take me a few games to hit top form in a season but I'm right on it this year."

But it is non-football matters that are swirling around the England camp right now with the on-going racism row involving captain and Chelsea team-mate John Terry.

However, Lampard is sure the controversy will not distract the team in the build-up to this showpiece friendly.

He said: "You have to get used to off-field situations like this — it comes with the territory of playing for a top club like Chelsea and representing England.

"What you need to do is try and keep out of whatever controversy it is. You must remember it's what matters on the pitch that's the most important.

"That's what most people react to and that's what I will keep trying to do for club and country."

And Lampard then reiterated his desire to go on and on playing for England for as long as he can.

He stressed: "England will always matter so much to me. I love playing for my country, I always have done.

"It's always a very proud moment and I will always feel honoured to be a part of the England squad. If it didn't matter it wouldn't be worth turning up.

"It doesn't matter if I'm on the bench or in the squad. I will always be there if selected."
