In-form Agbonlahor can fill Rooney's boots for England, Bent tells Capello

Darren Bent has told Fabio Capello: 'Gabby Agbonlahor can be your Wayne man.'

Villa's two-goal star benefited from a couple of Agbonlahor assists as the current England striker backed another's claims to be recognised once more at national level.

And with Wayne Rooney still absent from next year's European Championships group games pending the outcome of his appeal, thoughts are turning to a replacement.

No stopping that: Gabby Agbonlahor slams home his goal against Norwich

Agbonlahor endured his own personal annus horribilis under Gerard Houllier but has been Villa's most consistent performer so far this season.

Bent said: 'Gabby has been brilliant all season. He's got pace, power and he seems more confident this season - credit to him.

'He's gone away, he's worked hard and it's paying dividends this season. He's scoring goals and playing well.

'He's definitely up there with some of the other English strikers in the Premier League form-wise and what will help is that he can play in a number of positions.

'He can play behind a front man, too. Rooney is going to be out for the first three games, there's no reason why Gabby can't play in there.
