Spain a pain for Wayne as Fabio freezes him out until Euro 2012
Red danger: World and European champions Spain are next for England

Sure, Capello needs to identify a credible alternative with the start of the tournament in mind. And he  suggested United’s Danny Welbeck will play against Spain.

‘Welbeck played 15 minutes and played really well and it will be interesting, when we play against Spain, to see new players,
from the first minute,’ said Capello. ‘Welbeck is potentially a really good player. We can improve. We’ve got something really good.

When they want to be focused we are really good.’ No argument. Of the other England forwards Welbeck is probably the most talented. A player, in Sir Alex Ferguson’s opinion, of true international quality.

There is a strong argument for involving him in the game against Spain because experience of performing at that level will be vital.

But he should be partnered with Rooney rather than be his replacement. Not least because England need to gain confidence and prove to themselves they can compete with the best as much as they need to come up with a new plan.

Even with Rooney, Spain is going to be tough. But Capello needs to also prepare for a possible meeting with them in the latter stages of Euro 2012 and he can’t really do that without Rooney.
