John Terry has launched a passionate defence of Wayne Rooney following the Manchester United striker's red card during the European Championship qualifier against Montenegro on Friday night.

Rooney was given his marching orders in the 73rd minute after kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic with the score at 2-1.

Ten-man England then conceded an injury-time equaliser and were forced to hang on for the point that guaranteed them top place in Group G and qualification for the final stages of the tournament in Poland and Ukraine next year.
