Twelve minutes later the victory was sealed. Steve Morison’s reverse pass on the halfway line sent Bale clean through. The wide player kept his cool and comfortably slotted the ball to the side of Diego Benaglio to wrap up matters.

It could have been more emphatic, but Switzerland also had chances in an international that was far more open than most as they chased a victory that would have closed the gap on Montenegro.

As it was, the Swiss effort ended in desolation after Montenegro’s late goal for a 2-2 draw in  Podgorica ended their hopes of securing a spot in the play-offs.
