Will Capello risk Gerrard in vital Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro?

Fabio Capello will decide on Sunday whether to take a risk on Steven Gerrard for the final Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on Friday, when a draw will ensure England's place in the finals next summer.

The Liverpool captain played for 23 minutes of his side's 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday, only his third substitute appearance since he had groin surgery in March.

Up for England: Steven Gerrard has put the ball in Fabio Capello's court by not ruling himself out for Friday

Gerrard said last week that he thought the international would come too soon for him but Capello spoke to him on Saturday night and it is understood that the Liverpool player did not rule himself out of the squad.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said: 'It was another step forward for Steven, coming on in a derby and getting a few more minutes under his belt. I think Steve aired his views yesterday and I don't think I need to add anything to that. As regards any reaction (to the groin) after the game, there was nothing whatsoever.'

Capello will be aware that Dalglish has previously called on England to be 'sensible' in the reintroduction of Gerrard, urging caution. But central midfield could be a big problem area. Tom Cleverley, Jack Wilshere and Michael Carrick are all out and Capello could be short of central midfielders if he omits Gerrard.

Frank Lampard, Scott Parker, Gareth Barry and James Milner are the only obvious available candidates that the England manager has previously considered.

'We have big problems with the midfielders,' said Capello. 'Some players can stay on the bench, or come on at half-time, but not play all the game. For this reason we need to be careful in every moment.'
