England captain John Terry is excited by the competition for places in Fabio Capello’s starting XI as a new generation of talent is emerging.

The Three Lions produced an impressive performance to see off a dangerous Bulgarian side 3-0 on Friday with the likes of debutant Chris Smalling and Gary Cahill playing important roles.

"We are almost there," said Terry to the BBC. "It was a good performance and a great win. We asked for that yesterday."

Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley were brought into the squad but did not make the team, though Terry is excited to see a new generation of talent coming through the ranks.

"What we are seeing is competition for places all over the pitch," he stated. "That goes for all of us, myself included."

"We have seen the manager leave Rio out in the week - he said he had to play for Manchester United - so we all feel it. We are all here and wanting the same result.

"[The new young players] have brought a lot of enthusiasm into the camp and they are a big part of England's future."
