Make or break: Fabio Capello knows his side must improve on last season's form

‘Smalling has improved a lot,’ said Capello last week. ‘He has played with confidence. When he goes forward he doesn’t play with fear. I remember him as a centre-back but he is a really interesting player in this position.’

David Stockdale has  kept his place as  third-choice  keeper despite letting in seven goals for Ipswich against Peterborough last week.
